Tips from Valencia

Written by , Posted in ART, FOOD, LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL

After two days in Barcelona, we rented a car and headed towards Valencia. Valencia is very different from Barcelona, in which the roads are smaller with typical shops and beautiful cathedrals. Valencia has its own personality, especially with the construction of the “City of Arts and Sciences”, created by the architect Santiago Calatrava, which includes museums, the largest aquarium in Europe, and an opera and music auditorium.

Similar to the tapas concept, they serve “montaditos”, which means different ingredients over a piece of bread. The traditional drink, other than the Sangria, is the Horchata (water, sugar, and milk that comes from a typical herb). Valencia is also known for their orange plantations. The oranges have a strong taste and are used in a drink they call “Agua de Valencia” which is made up of orange juice, vodka, gin, and cava (Spanish champagne).
Here a few divine restaurants that I was lucky enough to try:

  1. Le Pepica: is a restaurant that exists for over 100 years where they serve one of the best paellas I have ever tried. The place is very traditional and many tourists can be found there, but the food is delicious and there is also an open kitchen where you can watch the paella being made.
  2. Mercatbar: is all about a modern take on tapas. The combinations are incredible and everything is worth a try, especially the mini truffle hamburgers.
  3. Valen & Cia: is another exceptional spot. This restaurant requires a reservation and sometimes can be hard to get one, but if you can, it is a must-try!

Other places worth visiting:

  1. Castell Xativa: is a castle located about an hour away from Valencia. The view is unbelievable and there is a charming restaurant inside. This site is really amazing.
  2. Castell Peniscola: is another great stop for a sip of hot wine and a visit to another great castle located in between Barcelona and Valencia.

Here are a few photos I took during my trip. I hope to be able to share with you a little bit of my great experience!
